WorkFest begins
Beginning February 28, 2010, more than 400 college students and short-term Housing crew leaders will descend upon eastern Kentucky for WorkFest–CAP’s annual home repair and building blitz. As in past years, we are hosting groups at two sites: Camp Andrew Jackson in our Cumberland Valley Region and Camp Caleb in the Sandy Valley Region. Over the course [...]
How can I afford to volunteer?
It’s a question we hear alot at the CAP Volunteer Program, and it’s a fair one. Volunteering for a year–or even for a few weeks–is a significant sacrifice for many people. But a lot of confusion exists around what it means exactly to “work for free.” Although many people may write off full-time volunteerism as [...]

Our new volunteers (not pictured: Nancy Tabor)
On Thursday, February 11, 2010, Christian Appalachian Project (CAP) Volunteer Program officially welcomed 13 new long-term volunteers at its winter Commissioning Service. Although some have been serving since October, many are just beginning their CAP journey.
One of those new arrivals is Ed Riehl, 64, from New York City. Ed is [...]

Your service needed
Have you ever felt God calling you to do more? We have an urgent need for long-term volunteers in several areas, particularly in Housing and Child and Family Development. Substandard housing is a perisistent and devestating challenge in Central Appalachia, and our volunteers serve year-round providing warm, safe and dry housing for children and families [...]
Discernment
“Discernment” is widely used to describe the process of choosing a religious vocation, but–as any full-time lay volunteer knows–the term is just as apropos to the decision of if, when and where to become a long-term volunteer. Choosing to volunteer full-time for any length of time is a significant commitment. Joining a volunteer program such [...]
Merry Christmas
We at the CAP Volunteer Program wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas. We hope you enjoy our video of Rich Layer, a perennial volunteer in our Christmas Basket program, reciting Luke’s Christmas story from memory. May the Nativity Narrative help bring the true meaning of Christmas into your hearts this season.

Volunteers make holidays brighter for Kentucky families
For most people, the Christmas season probably begins shortly after Thanksgiving. For volunteers in CAP’s Family Advocacy and Elderly Services programs, Christmas preparation begins in August. That’s when volunteer caseworkers take Christmas Basket applications from families who cannot afford to provide gifts for their children, and elderly individuals who are often forgotten this time of year. Participants in [...]
Baby Boomer volunteers
Christian Appalachian Project understands that full-time volunteers do not have to be twentysomething to make a difference. On the contrary, we recognize that second-career volunteers offer experience and expertise that Appalachia needs. About a third of CAP’s long-term volunteers are 55 or older, and CAP welcomes single and maried retirees to apply for any of our individual volunteer [...]
Post-graduate service
With the Fall semester coming to a close, many high school and college seniors are eager to have a set answer to the question, “What are you doing after graduation?” While some are scrambling for jobs or wading through a mountain of college or grad school applications, a small but growing group of young people [...]
