The priority application deadline for Fall 2012 long-term (12 months) volunteers is February 1. Although we will continue to accept applications until May 1, priority placement will be granted to applicants who apply by the earlier deadline.

Who should apply early?

We recommend the February 1 application date to prospective volunteers who have a strong interest in a particular service program, especially if the program has limited placements (Adult Education, Disability Services, Educational and Recreational Programming, Substance Abuse Recovery). We also recommend this deadline for college and high school seniors who would prefer to be interviewed before graduation. Please see our admissions timeline for full details.

Benefits of Long-term Volunteering

Long-term volunteers receive a multitude of benefits from their service time, including, but not limited to, the following:

Immersion in a new culture

Living in intentional Christian community

Valuable job-related experience

Even though volunteers receive many intangible benefits, it is important to note that making a long-term commitment can be a significant financial sacrifice. We ask our volunteers to make sacrifices, but we do not ask them to become destitute. CAP offers the following benefits to long-term volunteers to help make volunteering more affordable and to ease the concerns that you or your family may have:

Room and board

Monthly stipend

Health insurance

Potential student loan deferment

Potential AmeriCorps Education Award (currently unavailable)

Requirements

To become a long-term CAP volunteer, you must meet the following requirements:

Minimum age of 18 years old

Complete a volunteer application, including a complete driving records check, three personal references and a national background check

Be personally interviewed by CAP Volunteer Program staff

Pass a drug screening upon arrival at CAP

For positions that require volunteers to drive a CAP vehicle, applicants must be 21 or older with a good driving record

We are looking for volunteers who are dependable, flexible, emotionally mature, sensitive to other cultures, religions, etc., able to live in community, have a sense of humor and have a desire to serve others. We can teach the particular skills needed to perform in your service position, what we can’t teach is a compassionate heart and a passion for our mission.

Please refer to our Frequently Asked Questions page for more information about long-term volunteering.

Long-term volunteers (those who make a commitment of 12 months or longer) have always been the heart and soul of Christian Appalachian Project. Though CAP has long welcomed short-term volunteers (individuals who serve 3 weeks – several months), these volunteers have typically been an extra set of hands or have filled a need during a particularly busy time of year. In fact, in recent years we’ve had to stop admitting short-term volunteers all together because we did not have the housing space.

All that has changed. In an ideal world, we would have a long-term volunteer in every critical position. In the real world, sometimes there are not enough long-term volunteers to fill the need. We’re in such a time right now at CAP, and we need dedicated individuals willing to serve as short-term volunteers in mission critical positions.

Our biggest needs for the coming months will be in construction, elderly outreach, and in our food pantry. You can view all of our urgent needs here. Though the minimum commitment for short-term volunteers is three weeks, some positions will require a commitment of several months. Additionally, some positions will require volunteers with a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.

Short-term volunteers receive room and board and live in intentional community with other short-term and long-term volunteers. Like long-term volunteers, short-term volunteers make a commitment to CAP’s core values of Service, Community and Spirituality, and they participate fully in CAP volunteer life. Because room and board is provided, the only cost to the volunteer is travel costs to and from Kentucky.

Applications can be found online. Our application process is thorough, but well worth it! There is no application deadline for short-term volunteers and we accept volunteers year-round.If you have questions about CAP or short-term volunteering, please feel free to contact us at volunteer@chrisapp.org or 606-256-0973.

If you have a passion for service and some time to give this spring and summer, please consider whether God is calling you to serve with us.

The new house doubles CAP’s volunteer capacity for the county, and gives our volunteers something that was lacking in their old home—space. The house was made possible through the generous donations of many former volunteers and a grant the James Graham Brown Foundation. CAP began construction in October 2010, with a week-long build by the Fox Valley Mission group from Wisconsin. The group got a lot done in just a few days, but because CAP uses volunteer labor whenever possible, the project had to be put on hold several times so volunteers could work on participant homes. Work got back into full swing in the summer and fall of 2011.

With the appliances in, the cabinets installed and the inspections passed, the house was ready for our six McCreary volunteers in mid-October. The house has already allowed CAP to add a volunteer to Child and Family Development and bring in a volunteer for CAP’s Elderly Services program, which hasn’t been in McCreary County since 2004. Elderly Services Volunteer Janet Fiedler says one participant shrieked with joy when she found out a CAP person was back to visit and provide transportation.

Though they have gone through their share of struggles, our McCreary volunteers now have a brand new house to call their home. We pray that it may be great environment for them to live the CAP values of service, spirituality, and most of all, community.

These new volunteers spent the week in orientation at Camp Andrew Jackson learning CAP rules and guidelines (boring, but necessary) and also attending workshops on cooking in community–which means working with a limited budget and being attentive to dietary needs of 4-14 other people–leading devotions in an interdenominational setting, and handling conflict. The volunteers also had the opportunity to spend time in prayer and reflection and get to know the people with whom they will be sharing the next year of their lives.

The Commissioning ceremony is an opportunity for long-term volunteers to publicly declare their commitment to the three core values of CAP volunteer life: Service, Community and Spirituality. After hearing a reflection on each value, each volunteer signs a covenant representing their intent to live these values at CAP. Volunteers who have extended for another term of service also had the opportunity to recommit themselves to CAP.

Though all CAP volunteers are essential to our mission, we do recognize our long-term volunteers as a people set apart, singularly dedicated to being the hands and feet of Christ and making eastern Kentucky their home for the next year. Please take a moment to learn more about some of these 22 outstanding men and women.

Vickie Citter
Vickie arrived at CAP in September 2011 from Nashville, Tennessee, where she was working as an elderly care provider. She is continuing her service to the elderly as an Elderly Service caseworker with CAP. “I’ve looked at volunteer programs for over two years,” says Vickie. “CAP called to me because of being Christian based, community focused and having a wide range of activities and programs to participate in.” Vickie lives in Jackson Volunteer House.

Therese Costello
“I want to serve and grow in community,” says Therese, who joined CAP in August 2011 from New York. Therese is a 2011 graduate of St. Joseph’s College New York, which is also the alma mater of Bridget McCormack, ’10-’11, who first told Therese about CAP. Therese now lives in Johnson Volunteer House and serves at Martin County Child and Family Development Center.

Leah Coughlan
Leah is the fourth Stonehill College graduate we’ve had at CAP in the last three years, and we’re so happy to have her serving in the Family Advocacy program. Originally from Massachusetts, Leah now lives in Jackson Volunteer House. Leah chose CAP because she was drawn to the Appalachian region and because she hopes to discern “God’s calling for what He wants me to do in my life.”

Erin Cusick
From Ohio, Erin earned her degree in Psychology and English from Loyola University Chicago in May before joining CAP in August 2011. Erin now lives in Jackson Volunteer House and serves at Camp Andrew Jackson. Erin was attracted to CAP in part of because of the Volunteer Program’s commitment to Service, Community and Spirituality. “I believe that all three pillars are extremely important,” says Erin. “I want to make a difference in the lives of the people of Appalachia. I felt extremely welcome when I came to visit and I love the spirit of hospitality everyone at CAP shares.”

Kelsey DeVesty
Kelsey arrived at CAP in August 2011 after earning her degree in business administration from James Madison University. Originally from New Jersey, Kelsey now lives in Johnson Volunteer House and serves in the Housing program. When asked why she chose CAP over other service programs, Kelsey emphasizes “the way they are committed to, and truly care for, their volunteers and the experience they will have. This was the #1 thing that made CAP stand out.”

Nick was working at a college in his home state of Illinois before joining CAP’s Housing program in July 2011. He plans to continue working in the non-profit sector after completing his volunteer year with CAP. “I am hoping that I will learn as much as possible about every aspect of non-profit work, so that my time here may segue into working for a non-profit.” Nick lives in Johnson Volunteer House.

Chris volunteer at WorkFest three times with St. Peter’s College. A Staten Island native, Chris now lives at Magoffin Volunteer House and serves in the Elderly Housing program. “I am hoping to learn how to be a more Christ-centered person,” says Chris. “I hope to become more able to discern God’s will in my life and how to best serve others.” Chris arrived at CAP in July 2011.

Colleen, from Modesto, California, arrived as a long-term volunteer in September 2011, but she has volunteered in eastern Kentucky before with Loras College. Colleen now lives in Rockcastle Volunteer House and serves in the children’s program at one of CAP’s domestic violence centers.

Tim Haas
Who knew Facebook could change one’s life? Tim discovered CAP through an ad on the social networking site. After exploring CAP a little more, he decided to choose CAP for a year of post-graduate service after earning his degree from the University of North Dakota in May 2011. This summer, Tim served as the lead counselor at Crystal Springs Baptist Camp, an experience that will serve him well as a long-term volunteer with CAP’s Camp Andrew Jackson. Tim plans to enter seminary after his time at CAP, and is volunteering in part “to learn how to incorporate practical community service into a church ministry.” Tim lives in Jackson Volunteer House.

Whitney Helton
Whitney, originally from Winslow, Indiana, graduated from Hanover College before joining CAP in August 2011. She serves at the Family Life Child and Family Development Center and lives in Mt. Vernon Volunteer House. When asked why she is volunteering, Whitney says, “I want to serve God, help others and grow in my relationship with the Lord!”

Lois, who began her service with CAP in September 2011, is certainly no stranger to service. Before beginning her year with CAP’s Disaster Relief program, Lois served as a missionary in China teaching ESL. Lois originally applied to be a CAP volunteer more than 10 years ago when she decided to go back to school instead to earn her M.Div. We’re so glad the timing is finally right for Lois to serve with us. She lives in Johnson Volunteer House.

Elizabeth Longcore
Elizabeth is a recent graduate of Grand Valley State University with a degree in secondary education. The Michigan native now calls the McCreary Volunteer House home and serves in the afterschool program at Eagle Child and Family Development Center. Elizabeth began her service in September 2011 and says she’s volunteering for CAP because “it’s a great opportunity for personal growth. I have been blessed with so many wonderful things in my life that I want to be able to help those who are less fortunate.”

David arrived at CAP in September 2011 to serve in the Housing program. He grew up in New Hampshire and decided to take a break from college to volunteer full time. “I have been blessed with the life I have been given, and want to give back.” David lives in McCreary Volunteer House.

Julianna first volunteered with CAP at Camp Andrew Jackson for several summers before becoming a long-term volunteer in June 2011. She serves in the Family Advoacy program and lives independent of a volunteer house with her husband Mike O’Brien, ’08-’09, who is a CAP employee. “CAP has become part of my life,” Julianna says, “I wouldn’t feel right being anywhere else right now.”

Jimmy Owsley
Jimmy came to CAP in July 2011 all the way from Nevada, where he recently completed his studies at the University of Nevada–Reno. Jimmy teaches GED preparation at ABLE Familes, a CAP partner organization in West Virginia. When asked what he is hoping to learn from his service, Jimmy explained he wanted to learn “how to be more human, more loving, more faithful and more well-equipped for building God’s kingdom.” Jimmy lives in Floyd Volunteer House.

Katelyn Phillips
A 2011 graduate of SUNY Oswego, Katelyn joined CAP in August 2011. Katelyn is helping start the Elderly Housing program in Rockcastle County, where she will do minor home repair jobs for participants in CAP’s Elderly Services program. “I have been so blessed in my life,” Katelyn says, “and I want to give to those who are currently having a rough time and need some help.” Katelyn lives in Rockcastle Volunteer House.

“This is where God wants me to be,” says Sarah, a 2011 graduate of Bethel University. We can’t think of a better reason to volunteer. Sarah, originally from Minnesota, lives in Jackson Volunteer House and serves as an Elderly Services caseworker. She’s volunteering not far from Beattyvile, Kentucky, where she first volunteered in Appalachia on a mission trip with Cumberland Mountain Outreach. Sarah came to CAP in August 2011.

Kate Turner
Kate, a 2011 MIT grad, arrived at CAP September 2011 to serve in the Housing program. Originally from Maine, Kate now lives at McCreary Volunteer House. Kate, who is Catholic, is excited about learning from her housemates who come from different Christian backgrounds. “I want to live in an intentional Christian community and learn more about myself and my calling,” she says.

Eric graduated from Rhodes State University in Lima, Ohio, before joining CAP in August 2011. Eric lives in Floyd Volunteer House and serves at the Martin County Child and Family Development Center, a change of pace from his previous experience with CAP as a WorkFest participant. He hopes to walk deeper in his faith while at CAP.

Olga, who recently graduated from the University of Chicago, is a WorkFest veteran, and her experience with the alternative spring break program led her to apply to be a long-term volunteer. Olga now lives in McCreary Volunteer House and serves at the Eagle Child and Family Development Center. “CAP feels like home,” says Olga, who also cites her campus minister at U of C, Laura LeCompte, ’07-’08, as a big influence on why she came to CAP. She arrived at her new home July 2011.

Big changes are happening in the Christian Appalachian Project Volunteer Program. Effective August 2011, long-term volunteers will be asked to make a commitment of 12 months, rather than 9-12 months. Though 12 months has always been the preferred commitment, CAP has offered long-term volunteer benefits for volunteers serving 9-11 months for the past several years. Having volunteers serve for a full year will bring more stability to service programs and volunteer communities and reduce the gaps that often occur in between volunteer departures and arrivals.

Also effective August 2011, CAP will end its rolling admissions policy for long-term volunteers. For many years, CAP has had a very flexible admissions process for long-term volunteers: applicants could apply at any time and virtually name the date they would like to begin their service. Most long-term volunteer programs have somewhat rigid start and end dates, so CAP’s flexibility made us a little different and was attractive to many applicants. But there were also some disadvantages to this flexibility. Although many volunteers tended to arrive in the summer and early fall, the handful of volunteers arriving in October or April meant volunteer communities were almost always in a state of transition. And volunteers who did not arrive just ahead of one of the three long-term volunteer orientations would be in their service position for several months before being officially commissioned. Long-term volunteers will now be asked to arrive in August/September or January, and we will have two orientations a year. Having two possible start dates will ensure that new volunteers will always have some “veterans” around to welcome them into the house and help them get to know the area, while also minimizing the number of times volunteers are entering and exiting a community. This change in admissions means long-term applicants will be asked to submit their applications by certain dates, and you can view our admissions timeline here. We will continue to accept short-term volunteers on a rolling basis, as they will help “fill in the gaps” when we have a shortage of long-term volunteers.

We’re certain there will be a few bumps in the road as we make this transition, but we’re also very excited about how this change will increase consistency for our programs and the people they serve and bring more stability in our volunteer communities so our volunteers can grow in faith together. We believe the change will help us to live more fully our core values of Service, Community and Spirituality.

This event is often the only opportunity our short- and long-term volunteers have to meet the volunteers serving at Camp AJ and Camp Shawnee, and is the only opportunity the two camp staffs have to get together. This year’s event, held at Buckhorn State Park near Hazard, Kentucky, was held in conjunction with our summer Commissioning service, where we officially welcomed all the long-term volunteers who have joined CAP since April.

This new crop of volunteers is particularly experienced, with three of the eleven having previously participated in long-term service with other organizations. You can learn more about our newly commissioned volunteers in their profiles below. You can also view photos from the event at our Facebook page.

“I want to serve,” says Joey when asked why he chose to volunteer with CAP. The New Yorker turned North Carolinian was attracted to CAP primarily because of his interest in serving with a domestic organization. Joey ran his own t-shirt company before coming to CAP in May 2011. Joey serves at the Jean White Respite Center and lives in Johnson Volunteer House.

Shannon Kison
Shannon came to CAP and the Floyd Volunteer House from Everett, Washington. She arrived in April 2011 to serve in the Martin Child and Family Development Center. Shannon worked at a medical center before volunteering, but she says she felt a calling to put her “faith and trust in the Lord into action. God provided the map; I am learning to follow.”

Jason Skodak
Jason, a Michigander, came to CAP in April 2011. Jason serves in the Grateful Bread Food pantry, a change of pace from his former occupation as a home health aid. His faith led him to leave Michigan for his new home in the Rockcastle Volunteer House: “God has predestined for me to be here for such a time as this.”

Linda Rudderforth
Volunteering full-time is not new to Linda. Before coming to CAP in April 2011, Linda had lived in rural Romania as a missionary. She now lives in Rockcastle Volunteer House and serves at CAP’s Healing Rain Substance Abuse Recovery Center. When asked why she is volunteering with CAP, the Maryland native echoes the sentiments of many CAP volunteers: “I want to follow what the Lord wants me to do. I don’t have any fancy reasons, I know this is where God wants me, there were no doubts or hesitation.”

Frank Liccardo
Frank came to CAP in June 2011 from Evanston, Illinois. Before joining CAP’s Human Resources department, Frank volunteered with God’s Child Project in Guatemala. He wasn’t done with volunteering yet, and is serving with CAP to “give back and be of service to others less fortunate” than himself. Frank lives independent of a volunteer house.

Debe Polich
Debe joined CAP in April 2011 from Phoenix. She switched things up from her previous work as a legal secretary to volunteer full-time as an Elderly Services caseworker, providing visitation and transportation to homebound senior citizens. For Debe, moving to Johnson Volunteer House and serving in eastern Kentucky was a long time coming. “I have wanted to serve in the Appalachian region since I was a child,” she says. “The information I obtained showed CAP to be fiscally responsible, as well as totally interested in serving the poor of Appalachia.”

Kaye joined CAP in April 2011 from Poolesville, Maryland. Though Kaye was already working in the nonprofit sector as a data analyst and computer programmer for Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, she decided to trade in the “corporate lifestyle” for one of direct service at CAP’s Grateful Bread Food Pantry. ”After Christ called and saved me in the fall of 2009, I became more and more dissatisfied with a worldly life and felt a strong need to start living my convictions in a very sacrificial and meaningful way,” says Kaye. “CAP gave me the opportunity to give up what I had, pick up my cross and follow my Savior in service.” Kaye lives in Rockcastle Volunteer House.

Lisa Pade
Lisa is a Wisconsin native and a recent graduate of UW-Madison. She joined CAP in June 2011 because she wanted to volunteer after college and CAP allowed her to do so in a Christian community. Lisa lives in Jackson Volunteer House and serves in Elderly Services as a caseworker.

Judy Summers
Originally from Indianapolis, Judy has also called Tennessee and Texas home before moving to Kentucky in July 2011. She lives independent of a volunteer house and serves in Family Advocacy.

Laura Truman
Laura, originally from New Hampshire, describes her life before CAP as “bumming around” Montana and Europe after graduating from the University of New Hampshire in 2010. CAP was a great match for Laura because she has “always wanted to learn how to build houses” and was particularly attracted to rural service. She lives in Jackson Volunteer House and serves in Housing.

Tim Hubbard
Tim is an Alabama native who likes Auburn football just a little too much. The Faulkner University grad joined CAP in April 2011 after serving a term in AmeriCorps NCCC. Tim chose CAP for its Christian atmosphere and because he wanted to continue his calling to serve others. He lives in Floyd Volunteer House and serves in Housing.

Christian Appalachian Project congratulates all recent college graduates on an impressive achievement. We especially wish to congratulate the 13 and counting recent grads who have joined us or will be joining us as long-term volunteers this summer and fall. Take a moment to meet some of our volunteers from the Class of 2011:

We love Stonehill College grads at CAP, and we’re glad to welcome Leah, our fourth Stonehill grad in the past three years. Leah found out about CAP through Catholic Volunteer Network and a friend, Jessica Wirth, who volunteered with CAP last year. She will be serving in Family Advocacy and living in Jackson Volunteer House beginning in August. Leah is from Massachusetts.

Erin, originally from Ohio, is trading in the big city of Chicago (where she studied Psychology and English at Loyola University) for the bucolic hills of Jackson County. Erin will serve one year at Camp Andrew Jackson and live in Jackson Volunteer House. She found out about CAP through Catholic Volunteer Network.

Colleen just graduated from Loras College in Iowa, but originally hails from Modesto, California. Colleen found out about CAP somewhat accidentally–she volunteered with her college at St. Paul Catholic Mission in McKee, Kentucky, where a former CAP volunteer was the pastoral associate. After learning more about CAP and submitting an application, she decided on a year of service with one of CAP’s domestic violence shelters. Colleen will begin her service in September and live in Rockcastle Volunteer House.

To bring home our message that just one person can make a difference for Appalachia, we are asking festival goers to bring just one can to donate to our food pantry. Our alumni survey is your opportunity to let us know how the Volunteer Program can better serve our exiting volunteers and alumni.

The survey has two purposes. The first is to gather your opinions onCAP Connection, the website, reunions, career services, etc. Maybe you’re perfectly satisfied, or maybe you want to see a lot of changes. We want to know either way. The second purpose is simply to learn more about you and what ways if any you would like to be more involved with CAP.

Although we do ask for your name in the survey, most of your responses will be anonymous and seen only in aggregate form. In order to keep our database up-to-date, we will need to link your name to your responses for contact and career information, ways you would like to be involved with CAP and whether or not you are a CAP donor.

Your response is important so that we can have the most accurate picture of our alumni and provide more relevant services to you. Implementation of your ideas won’t be instant (this is CAP after all), but your voice will be heard. As an added incentive, all respondents will be entered into a random drawing for a (donated) $100 Visa gift card.

Thank you in advance for helping the Volunteer Program provide the best alumni relations we can. I very much look forward to reading your feedback.
