Small Farms and Gardens
Christian Appalachian Project’s Small Farms and Gardens program partners with families and elderly individuals as they begin their gardens each spring. In addition, we have developed a partnership with our high school agriculture departments whereby local high school students grow transplants from seed. These transplants are distributed in the spring along with educational resources on gardening successfully. The program also provides tools and resources for families to successfully grow, harvest and preserve nutritious food items. Each spring and summer Family Advocacy caseworkers visit the family’s home (and garden) to share in the joy of the fruits of their labor and offer additional resources if needed.
Donations of seeds, tools or preservation items (such as freezer bags and canning supplies) are appreciated. Monetary donations will also go toward the purchase of seeds or other tools for these gardens. Your generosity will allow participants to not only eat healthier foods, but also feel empowered as they grow successful produce for their families.
