Summer Camp

“By far the most fun, crazy, loud, gut-busting, grace-filled, exciting, sometimes frustrating, exhausting, amazing, blessed, outrageous, wet, hot, sometimes freezing and best summer experiences of my young adult life.” – Camp AJ volunteer

Christian Appalachian Project offers two summer camp programs in eastern Kentucky: Camp Andrew Jackson and Camp Shawnee. Both provide a rewarding week of learning and fun to more than 1,000 Appalachian children each summer. With a charge of only $10 per child, the camps serve those who could otherwise not afford the opportunity to attend a summer camp.

Summer Camp activities include canoeing, fishing, arts and crafts, swimming, hiking, camping, praise and worship and field games. While all the activities are fun for the children, they also provide the opportunity to learn important life skills such as leadership, safety, team building, self-esteem and respect for others. The kids love the activities, but what they remember most about camp are the volunteers who cared enough to spend their summer with them.

Benefits & Requirements of Summer Camp Volunteering

CAP’s summer camps would not be possible without the service of the nearly 60 volunteers who come each summer. Counselors, lifeguards (training available), arts & crafts instructors, office helpers and nurses are needed to make camp a success. What we promise you in return is a summer you will never forget and the chance to meet some amazing volunteers from across the country.

All camp volunteers receive room and board and transportation upon arrival. Airport pickup is available in Lexington for Camp Andrew Jackson and in Huntington, West Virginia, for Camp Shawnee. You may also bring a car to camp. Travel costs are the responsibility of the volunteer.

To be considered as a camp volunteer, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Minimum age of 18 years old
  • Commitment to community life, prayer life and service work
  • Willing to serve for a minimum of three weeks (minimum one week for nurses)
  • Complete a volunteer application including three personal references and a criminal records check
  • Pass a drug screening upon arrival at camp
  • Nurses (RN and LPN) must have a Kentucky license or be licensed in a state participating in the Nurse Licensure Compact
