Christian Appalachian Project (CAP) is seeking nurses to volunteer at our overnight summer camps in eastern Kentucky. CAP summer camps provide an affordable summer camp experience for hundreds of children, many of whom come from low-income families. Nurses with a Kentucky license (or who are licensed in a compact state) are needed. Room and board is provided.
Volunteer nurses can expect to…
Oversee nurse’s station to see that it is furnished with basic supplies, keep meds locked, etc.
Perform a variety of first aid: treat bee stings, rashes (poison ivy & oak), blisters, splinters, sunburns, bruises/abrasions, etc.
Monitor daily medication for campers and document in appropriate records; have evening meds ready so that staff can oversee camper meds at bedtime.
Work varied hours based on camp schedule. Mondays (10am-6pm) be available during registration to check in meds and follow up with campers’ health conditions and document all meds for the week. Tuesdays-Thursdays 8am-6pm. On Fridays, service consists of giving morning meds and gathering all meds to send home with children; children typically depart by 1pm.
Review campers’ medical histories weekly to become aware of camper population and possible needs for the week.
Serve closely with camp staff to report illnesses/injuries and follow up with Camp Coordinator and Manager regarding campers’ health.
Can participate in some camp activities that do not restrict you from being available to attend to camp medical needs during the scheduled working hours.
