Current Volunteer Needs
One of the most common questions we receive from potential CAP volunteers is “What is your greatest need?” Below are the programs that have short-term positions available in the spring and summer. Some of thee programs can use a three-week volunteer, while others require a commitment of several months. We will next accept long-term volunteers in August/September.
Summer Camp: Counselors, lifeguards, office help, arts & crafts instructors and registered nurses needed June 11 – August 3. Three week minimum commitment.
Elderly Services: Elderly Housing volunteers needed to complete minor home repair jobs for elderly participants and lead other group and long-term volunteers.
Several Elderly Caseworkers also needed. Caseworkers provide visitation and transportation services to homebound senior citizens. Must be 21 or older with a good driving record.
Housing: Volunteers needed to complete minor and major home repairs and new construction for families in need. Volunteers serve in teams under the direction of a skilled Housing employee. Volunteers also frequently help to lead church and college groups. No previous experience necessary.
Food Pantry: Volunteers needed to help sort, collect and transport food donations for families in need as well as assist families when they visit the pantry. Also responsible for monthly commodities distribution for the elderly.
Domestic Abuse Centers: Volunteer needed to assist the outreach caseworker at one of CAP’s 24-hour safe shelters for female domestic violence survivors. Must have background or interest in public speaking and working with incarcerated women.
Disaster Relief: Self-motivated, self-starting volunteers needed to serve in the Disaster Relief program. These volunteer may be involved of all stages of disaster response within Kentucky and other Appalachian states: preparation and loading of materials, relief work (mucking houses, distributing supplies), volunteer coordination and clean-up and unloading of supplies and materials. When not responding directly to disasters, volunteers will play a key administrative role in the program by serving on local disaster relief commitees, attending trainings and training others. This position requires volunteers who are independent, energetic, very flexible, likes to travel and has superior communication skills. Must be 21 or older and have a valid driver’s license and good driving record. Construction skills are not required, but would greatly benefit the program.
Substance Abuse Recovery: Volunteer needed to serve in a faith-based residential recovery center for women struggling with addiction. Volunteer may provide transportation, teach classes, participate in therapeutic community or perform other staff assistant duties. Night and weekend shifts probable.
Volunteer Group Hosts: Volunteers needed to host the many week-long volunteer groups that serve with CAP. Volunteers will plan meals, shop, cook and be the “face of CAP” for church and school groups.
Wellness Program: Volunteer needed to coordinate the Wellness initiative of CAP’s Human Resources department. The purpose of the Wellness Program is to encourage CAP employees and volunteers to make small changes towards a healthier lifestyle. Responsibilities include creating interest and participation in the Wellness program, recruiting Wellness Team members, scheduling and leading Wellness Team meetings, leading the Wellness Team in planning events, challenges and activities, keeping the Wellness Program in people’s “mind” through the distribution of helpful information, finding resources for wellness incentives, etc.
Risk Management: Volunteer needed to provide administrative support to the Risk Management Department of Christian Appalachian Project. The volunteer will maintain all databases, coordinate safety training (CPR, First aid and bloodborne pathogens; forklift; driver evaluations), create safety data graphs and charts and coordinate drug testing. Certification to teach CPR/FA/BBP desired, but not required. Must be highly proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Powerpoint.
Clerical: Volunteer needed for filing and other clerical duties in CAP’s Accounting Department.
