Healing Rain Substance Abuse Recovery Center

“My personality is not made for building houses, but I would eventually learn about the other wonderful programs CAP has to offer. When they mentioned they had a substance abuse recovery center, I could feel my mind and my heart finally agreeing on something.”

Short-term volunteer needed immediately.

In 2002, the Appalachian region of Kentucky, which is home to 20% of Kentucky’s population, reported 50% of the state’s drug-related deaths. Substance abuse continues to affect the physical and economic well-being of Appalachian people.

Christian Appalachian Project responded to the growing substance abuse epidemic by launching the Healing Rain Substance Abuse Recovery Center for women in September 2005. Healing Rain is a twelve-bed faith-based residential facility for women of all income levels seeking to overcome addiction. The six-month program provides a therapeutic community for women to learn life skills, begin their journey in the 12-step program, set and achieve goals and realize their worth. Healing Rain participants are active members in the CAP community, volunteering at our food pantry and thrift store and attending CAP-wide events for staff and volunteers. One Healing Rain graduate has even served as a long-term volunteer at Healing Rain upon completing the program.

Volunteers in Substance Abuse Recovery may teach classes, provide transportation, assist in therapeutic community and perform other staff assistant duties. Some night and weekend shifts are required.
