Healing Rain Substance Abuse Recovery
In 2002, Appalachian Kentucky, which is home to 20% of Kentucky’s population, reported 50% of the state’s drug-related deaths. Prescription pain killers and methamphetamines are the primary drugs of choice for eastern Kentuckians struggling with addiction. Though a state crackdown on internet pharmacies and meth production has alleviated the problem somewhat, substance abuse continues to affect the physical and economic well-being of Appalachian people.
CAP responded to the growing substance abuse epidemic by launching the Healing Rain Substance Abuse Recovery Center for women in September 2005. Healing Rain is a twelve-bed faith-based residential facility for women seeking to overcome the addictions that keep themselves and their families trapped in a cycle of poverty. The six-month program provides a therapeutic community for women to learn life skills, begin their journey in the 12-step program, set and achieve goals and realize their worth.
Volunteers in Substance Abuse Recovery may teach classes, provide transportation, assist in therapuetic community and perform other staff assistant duties. Some night and weekend shifts are required.
