In our daily work to carry out the mission of building hope, transforming lives, and sharing Christ’s love through service in Appalachia, no one plays a more instrumental role than our volunteers and AmeriCorps members. Volunteers go out on home visits, teach classroom lessons, stock food pantry shelves, repair homes, orchestrate disaster recovery and so much more, all while living in intentional community and taking time for spiritual/personal reflection. We have many critical volunteer positions needing filled and hope you will consider whether you are called to respond.
This June and July we have an urgent need for individuals to serve on staff at our Summer Camps. Over the course of the summer, Camp AJ and Camp Shawnee expect to serve over 1,000 children from families in need. Our camps provide traditional activities like hiking, swimming, arts and crafts, boating, and fishing, all the while weaving through instruction and modeling of important leadership traits including friendship, independence, teamwork, and responsibility. There are a variety of roles needing filled including kitchen/office help, arts and crafts, camp counselors, lifeguards, nurses, and photography/social media coordinators. The minimum commitment is just three weeks (one week for medical personnel) and room and board is provided on site. For those able to commit to the full summer season, travel reimbursement and AmeriCorps opportunities may be available.
For an even more immersive experience, please consider our year of service program! We are taking applications for placements in Home Repair, Education, Elderly Services and more. A full list is available here and many of the positions are for AmeriCorps members. Our volunteers serve in mission critical roles with a focus on building personal relationships with the individuals we serve, our participants. We welcome people of all ages (18+) and backgrounds to apply!
In addition to their service placement our volunteers also live in intentional community, making a regular commitment to share meals and reflect on their experience together. CAP provides room and board, health insurance, travel reimbursement, a modest stipend, and time off. Those serving as AmeriCorps members may be eligible for an Education Award of $5,815. All volunteers are encouraged in their role by dedicated support staff, attend several retreats and may choose to engage in professional development opportunities.
For anyone passionate about making a difference for families in need in Eastern Kentucky – why wait? Take the leap, step out in faith, and apply today. As Sam R., a current volunteer, recently wrote, “None of this was ever a part of my plan, but man am I thankful that Gods plan isn’t the same as mine. I’ll choose faith over fear, every single time.”
