In January we celebrated the commitment of seven new AmeriCorps members along with two recommitments and several new short-term members. These individuals range from high school graduates to retired age, but all come to CAP with a singular purpose. To give of themselves in service of CAP’s mission to build hope, transform lives and share Christ’s love through service in Appalachia. Please keep these members of the CAP family in your prayers as they embark on this year of service.

Barbara Van Cura
Barbara was a CAP donor for many years and recently became interested in our service opportunities. Before coming to CAP, Barbara worked part-time at a beauty salon and volunteered with the elderly in her community. Barbara chose to serve with CAP because, “I have always felt need to help the less fortunate. To give comfort and make someone happy.” Barbara is serving as an AmeriCorps Elderly Services Caseworker and living in the Johnson Volunteer Community.
Courtney Powers
When considering different service programs Courtney writes, “CAP stood out most to me because of their mission statement and the daily devotions in the volunteer communities.” Courtney has her Bachelor’s Degree from Paul Smith College and before coming to CAP she was working at an art museum. Courtney is serving as an AmeriCorps Elderly Services Caseworker and living in the Floyd Volunteer Community.
Tyler Moody
Tyler was working as a framer for a construction company before coming to CAP. Tyler originally joined as a short-term volunteer and then decided to recommit for a full year of service as an AmeriCorps Home Repair Crew Member. During his year Tyler is hoping to, “grow in my faith, and expand on my knowledge of construction and carpentry work.” Tyler is living in the McCreary Volunteer Community.
Sarah Harp
Sarah found CAP when searching for an AmeriCorps program placement. Sarah writes, “I want to have a better understanding of people from backgrounds other than my own, and I want to be able to sympathize with those people.” Sarah is a recent graduate of SUNY Fredonia. She is serving as an AmeriCorps Early Childhood Educator and living in the Mount Vernon Volunteer Community.
Carol Halpin
Carol is retired and was working part-time as a parent advocate for a non-profit agency before joining CAP. Carol writes, “Although I am retired I feel I have much to give. My prayer is that I am following the path the Lord has set before me.” Carol is serving as an AmeriCorps Elderly Services Caseworker and living in the Floyd Volunteer Community.
Samantha Harris
Samantha chose to serve with CAP because, “I want to use my life here on earth doing something for others. If I can make one person smile or feel like they matter, then I think it was a pretty good day.” Samantha is a recent high school graduate who was working two part-time jobs before coming to CAP. She is serving as an AmeriCorps Early Childhood Educator and living in the Mount Vernon Volunteer Community.
Patti Jenkins
Patti originally served with CAP more than ten years ago as a long-term volunteer in the Elderly Services Program. After running her own business and caretaking for her mother she has rejoined CAP for another year of service. Patti chose to come back to CAP because, “I feel a sense of belonging here. I think that’s how Kentucky effects people”. Patti is serving as an AmeriCorps Elderly Services Caseworker and living in the Johnson Volunteer Community.
