Assistant Crew Leaders Needed - Serve for a week in March or April

Submitted by CAP Volunteer on Mon, 02/01/2016

Planning has kicked into high gear here at Christian Appalachian Project (CAP) for our alternative spring break programs (WorkFest and YouthFest). In March and April, we will welcome hundreds of college and high school students who will be working on dozens of home repair sites throughout Eastern Kentucky. These students volunteer to ensure that many of the participants on our housing repair waiting list will finally have a home that is safe, warm, and dry. The majority of students who participate are unskilled and inexperienced in home repair, so CAP is looking for individuals experienced in construction to serve as assistant crew leaders. These crew leaders are responsible for helping to train students and lead/supervise repair activities on job sites.  Below are reflections and photos from several veteran assistant crew leaders. WorkFest and YouthFest are powerful experiences, not just for students and homeowners, but for crew leaders as well. Bill Mrozowski I find that the Spirituality of the young people who gather here and the older people who shepherd them is almost palpable. I need to reconnect with that powerful Spirituality again and again. I enjoy the fellowship of all of the students and volunteers who come to Kentucky to give of themselves. I love interacting with the participant families and I oftentimes get to witness these people giving generously from their own poverty. I am always humbled by and want to be a part of an experience like this that shows humanity at its very best.

Teleia Stringfellow I've been around non-profit organizations my entire life, but it wasn't until I arrived at CAP that I truly experienced the love of God. CAP cares about their participants, volunteers, employees, communities, donors, and everyone with whom they come in contact. They don't just talk the talk — they walk the walk. They are truly the hands and feet of Christ and this is why I continue to come back.

Jack Adams What a unique thrill it is to be part of the CAP family and vision. It is an honor and a privilege that I attempt to share with anyone who will listen. Working with CAP allows me a chance to live out the scripture, "…From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded.”

If you have experience in carpentry or construction, please consider joining us this spring. Assistant crew leaders serve for a minimum of one week, with a multiple week commitment preferred. Room and board is provided. Email volunteer@chrisapp.org or call 606-256-0973 to learn more.
