Lowe’s Associates Volunteer with Christian Appalachian Project for Third Year

APPALACHIA – (Oct. 20, 2021) Paintsville Lowe’s Home Improvement associates are working alongside Christian Appalachian Project’s (CAP) Elderly Housing Program this week to give a Johnson County woman safer accessibility to her home through the company’s Give Back Time Initiative.

“The associates at Lowe’s are always ready to help CAP, whether it’s in the store or coming to help on a worksite,” said Ronnie Griffith, CAP Elderly Housing crew leader. “They know the people we serve, and they see the need in the community. They are a part of CAP’s mission in building hope, transforming lives, and sharing Christ’s love through service in Appalachia.”

For 15 years, associates at the Paintsville Lowe’s have partnered with CAP to ensure staff and volunteers have necessary materials to make homes safe, warm, dry, and accessible. Through the Give Back Time initiative, Paintsville Lowe’s associates have worked with CAP hands-on to help with Elderly Housing projects for three years. The initiative encourages associates to serve in their communities and offers them hours of paid volunteer time to annually dedicate to a nonprofit organization of the associate’s choice. 

“What CAP does for the community is such a great thing and we just want to be able to get out in the community and be a part of that,” said Candy Bates, store manager. “CAP has been a great avenue for us to do that because it reaches so many people. This is a great opportunity for us to get out in the community and to work and be able to help people in need.”

Over the course of four days, some 20 Lowe’s associates will have worked to build a ramp that will provide safe and easy access in and out for the homeowner who is having knee surgery and for times when her mother stays with her. There are more than double the number of associates who helped on a worksite during the first year Lowe’s came to help CAP.

“This experience is a positive and exciting time for our associates. We look forward to it every year,” Bates said. “Being able to get out into the community with CAP has helped us learn what our community is going through and creates compassion among us. We are blessed to work for a company that allows us to do things like this, but we’re also blessed to work for a company that provides for and touches the lives of so many families.”

During 2020, Lowe’s associates contributed 143,000 hours of community service, prior to COVID-19 directives. By 2025 the company has a goal of reaching more than 3 million hours of associate community service.
