APPALACHIA – (August 11, 2022) For the seventh consecutive year, Christian Appalachian Project (CAP) has been awarded an AmeriCorps federal grant to support programs serving children and families in need in Eastern Kentucky.
AmeriCorps, the federal agency for volunteering and national service, provides opportunities for Americans to serve their country domestically, address the nation’s most pressing challenges, improve lives and communities, and strengthen civic engagement. Each year, the agency invests more than $800 million in grants for local nonprofit, community, tribal, and state organizations; places more than 250,000 AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers in intensive service roles; and empowers millions more to serve as long-term, short-term, or one-time volunteers.
This year’s funding will support the placement of up to 96 AmeriCorps members in CAP’s Eastern Kentucky service area. These members will serve full-time in-home repair, education, hunger and poverty relief, and in CAP’s response to the flood-impacted counties. “Our AmeriCorps members help CAP expand our capacity to build hope and transform lives in Appalachia,” says Guy Adams, CAP’s President and CEO. “Whether they are teaching in our preschool, feeding the hungry at our food pantries, mentoring youth in our teen leadership initiative, or providing families with much-needed home repair, AmeriCorps members make an impact felt long after their term of service.”
Individuals interested in serving with CAP have several different options, says Amy Schill, CAP’s AmeriCorps Specialist—not only in type of service, but also in the length of commitment. “We welcome new members monthly for commitments ranging from one month up to a year. All members receive a living allowance and scholarship/student loan assistance, and some members are eligible for health insurance.”
Positions are available in Floyd, Jackson, Johnson, McCreary, and Rockcastle Counties. New members are especially needed to serve in home repair, education, elderly services, and in CAP’s two food pantries. All members have the opportunity to participate in CAP’s Disaster Relief program.
