WorkFest 2012
We’re excited for the 20th anniversary of WorkFest! Over the course of three weeks, we will welcome students from 36 colleges and universities who are giving their spring break in service to others, but are receiving so much more in return. Check this page often in March for blog posts about WorkFest and pictures from the job sites.
New orientation class
Each January, Christian Appalachian Project offers a smaller long-term volunteer orientation for December college graduates and other applicants who would prefer a January start state over our traditional August/September admissions period. We're so happy to have several volunteers starting their new year with CAP and dedicating 2012 to serving the poor and marginalized in Appalachia.
Prospective long-term volunteers: Apply by February 1 for priority placement
The priority application deadline for Fall 2012 long-term (12 months) volunteers is February 1. Although we will continue to accept applications until May 1, priority placement will be granted to applicants who apply by the earlier deadline.
Who should apply early?
Short-term volunteers more important than ever
Long-term volunteers (those who make a commitment of 12 months or longer) have always been the heart and soul of Christian Appalachian Project. Though CAP has long welcomed short-term volunteers (individuals who serve 3 weeks - several months), these volunteers have typically been an extra set of hands or have filled a need during a particularly busy time of year.
New volunteer house opens
In October 2011, the eight-bedroom McCreary Volunteer House opened, and CAP’s McCreary County volunteers left their previous home—a small trailer—behind for good. The new house doubles CAP’s volunteer capacity for the county, and gives our volunteers something that was lacking in their old home—space. The house was made possible through the generous donations of many former volunteers and a grant the James Graham Brown Foundation.

Big changes for the Volunteer Program
Big changes are happening in the Christian Appalachian Project Volunteer Program. Effective August 2011, long-term volunteers will be asked to make a commitment of 12 months, rather than 9-12 months. Though 12 months has always been the preferred commitment, CAP has offered long-term volunteer benefits for volunteers serving 9-11 months for the past several years.
CAP commissions new long-term volunteers
Each summer, the CAP Volunteer Program invites all summer camp, short-term and long-term volunteers out for summer activity. This event is often the only opportunity our short- and long-term volunteers have to meet the volunteers serving at Camp AJ and Camp Shawnee, and is the only opportunity the two camp staffs have to get together.
Congrats to the Class of 2011!
Christian Appalachian Project congratulates all recent college graduates on an impressive achievement. We especially wish to congratulate the 13 and counting recent grads who have joined us or will be joining us as long-term volunteers this summer and fall. Take a moment to meet some of our volunteers from the Class of 2011:
Ichthus 2011: Be the one.
Christian Appalachian Project is proud to be a ministry partner of the Ichthus Festival in Wilmore, Kentucky, for the fifth consecutive year. We will have volunteers at the Christian festival checking wristbands, operating our shower trailer and telling people about our work at our booth in the Global Village.
